3. I subscribe to America Online. My web browser doesn't seem to show some parts of your site. What's the best way to view your Web site?
The best solution is to download the latest version of AOL's software (Version 6.0 as we write this) by going to keyword: upgrade. The upgrade is free and versions are available for Windows and Macintosh. The latest version should make your entire Internet surfing sessions more enjoyable due to new features and upgrades in AOL's software. Also note that AOL "caches", or copies, our site into its main computers as a way to speed the viewing time of pages for its members, so you may not necessarily be viewing the most current news on our site.

4. I'm having trouble reading your site. Graphics don't seem to work like they should. And the type doesn't display in a completely readable form. What's wrong?
We have done our best to make this site work with most standard browsers. But some browser programs have significant differences. There are even big variations in versions of popular programs. This site is optimized for Netscape Navigator 4.0 or higher and Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher. You can view most of our site with earlier versions of these and other browsers, but we recommend upgrading your browser to one of these two. All upgrades are available free of charge from Netscape and Microsoft. Just follow the directions you find on their sites.

Digital Television Related Questions
1. What is High Definition Television?
HDTV brings you a higher quality picture. It has been in development and on display for years at the Smithsonian Institute Museum in Washington, DC and now, it can be in your home. The big change you’ll notice right away is that the picture shape is wider, more like what you’re used to seeing in a movie theatre. Please remember Digital TV is not necessarily HDTV but you need a Digital TV in order to see HDTV.
2. What is the difference between DTV and HDTV?
Digital Television allows broadcasters to put more data into their signal. As an example, an analog signal requiring 6 megahertz (MHz) will require fewer MHz with digital television. As a result, a broadcaster could use the additional space gained by digital transmission to transmit four simultaneous signals in standard definition (SDTV). High definition adheres to a standard of digital television transmission denoting that the sound and images are of a higher quality, taking advantage of the additional bandwidth. Digital broadcasters are not required to broadcast in this enhanced standard, but it is likely that many will broadcast in HDTV. Remember that all HDTV is broadcast in DTV, but not all DTV is HDTV. HDTV is high-definition television, a television picture format made possible by digital broadcasting. HDTV offers viewers high-quality pictures and Dolby Digital surround sound. HDTV uses the same amount of bandwidth (6 megahertz) as used in the current analog system, but HDTV can transmit more than six times the information as the analog system. This translates to higher quality in picture and sound.
3. How Much Better Is The Quality?
Currently, television pictures are made up of 525 lines that are scanned horizontally. HDTV pictures are created by scanning 1,080 lines. Adding twice the amount of lines multiplies the amount of pixels (the small dots that create the picture). Current sets have about 300,000 pixels, while an HDTV screen is composed of more than 2 million pixels. Having more pixels on your screen will dramatically improve the sharpness of your pictures, allowing you to see picture details like never before. HDTV sets also have wider, movie-theater like screens that more closely resemble human peripheral vision, making it more natural to watch.
back to top of DTV questions4. Is The Sound Different?
Complimenting the lifelike pictures are 5.1 channels of CD-quality digital audio. Current stereo TV sets offer only two channels of audio. HDTV can deliver true surround sound: front speakers on the right, center and left, along with two back speakers and a subwoofer.
5. Are HDTV Signals Broadcast On Special Frequencies?
No. HDTV broadcasts use the same channels as regular analog television. You should be able to receive DTV with any standard over-the-air antenna. The exact style of antenna that you will need for optimal reception may vary depending on your geographic location and distance to the transmission source. Click here for more information on antenna selection.
6. Where Can I Buy An HDTV Set? How Much Do They Cost?
If your TV has progressive-scan inputs for connection to a computer display card or DVD player, you'll be able to see some HDTV signals by adding a set-top box receiver (STB), which will generally yield some but not all of the advanced resolution of HDTV. These cost in the range of $400 to $1,000. Otherwise, you can buy new HDTV sets at most electronics stores. Just like any cutting-edge electronic equipment, the early receivers are expensive.
7. What do I need to have to watch Digital TV or HDTV?
Most likely you will want to buy a new TV set to get Digital TV and you will have to buy one in order to see HDTV. At the very least, there will be inexpensive set-top boxes coming out soon that will convert the Digital TV signals so they can be viewed on a conventional TV set but it won’t be High Definition TV and it won’t have the new wider screen. Right now, most DTV sets capable of receiving HDTV are expensive.
8. What shows can I watch in HDTV?
Currently very few programs are broadcast in HDTV. These are primarily selected live events such as some sports telecasts. Prime time programming will most likely be next as the networks begin producing and distributing their programs in HDTV. When we have advance notice of HDTV broadcasts we will identify those programs at the beginning of the telecast. Additionally, we will notify listing services of high definition broadcasts although we don't know whether these broadcasts will be identified in the print media.
9. How do I receive KMSB’s digital signal?
KMSB’s digital signal will be coming from Mount Bigelow. If you receive KMSB on Channel 11 then the chances are good that you’ll be able to receive KMSB’s Digital TV signal and HDTV programming. At this time the only way to receive KMSB’s Digital TV signal is over the air from the station’s main transmitting site on Mount Bigelow, which is the mountain peak just east of Mount Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson.
10. I watch KMSB on Channel 50, will I get KMSB’s Digital TV?
No. As things now stand, TV stations are only being allowed to broadcast on one digital frequency.
11. I subscribe to digital cable, will I receive digital TV?
No. Digital cable is not the same thing as Digital TV. Digital cable refers only to how the cable company sends its signals along the cable. A Digital TV plugged into digital cable will only receive the regular standard definition television no matter what station you’re watching. Cable companies are working on plans to relay HDTV signals but so far no cable systems in Southern Arizona offering Digital TV or HDTV.
12. DirecTV and Dish Network have local Tucson television, will they have HDTV?
No, sorry. The satellite services are prepared only to relay standard definition television for the foreseeable future. DirecTV will be offering local Tucson television this summer but it will be standard definition.
13. How do I tune in the Digital TV signal?
Tune to Channel 25, that’s the Channel number KMSB has been assigned to relay its Digital TV signal. As part of setting up your new Digital TV, you can set the dial so that Channel 25 actually shows up as Channel 11 on your set.
14. What kind of antenna do I need to get Digital TV?
If you can receive a good clear signal over the air on Channel 11, you shouldn’t need much of an antenna. One of those old "loop antennas" they used to sell for $1 to get UHF stations could do the trick. Or if you have an old set of "rabbit ears" with a "bow-tie" on it, that could work. Fortunately, antennas capable of receiving UHF Channels 14-60 are relatively easy to find at most stores. The best solution may be a rooftop antenna.
15. Where do I point the antenna?
That can be a little tricky. Common sense would tell you to point it toward Mount Bigelow north of Tucson. But sometimes you might need to make some adjustments. Trees can adversely affect the signal. If your home is made of stucco, there’s usually a metal gridwork underneath the stucco that creates havoc with TV signals. Most of the new HDTV receivers have a signal strength meter on them that you can use as a guide to help you find the strongest signal.
back to top of DTV questions16. My homeowners association won’t let me put up an antenna
Yes they will. The 1996 Federal Communications Commission Acts says they have to let you. If their prohibition was written prior to 1996, it is mostly null and void, and if necessary you should suggest they have a lawyer check it out. Most homeowners associations say that you can put a "reasonable" outdoor antenna system to receive local over-the-air television signals.
17. What hours will KMSB broadcast Digital TV?
24/7. But remember that doesn’t mean everything is in HDTV. When the station isn’t broadcasting in HDTV, viewers will see regular standard definition programming.
18. I don’t want to do all of this right now. Am I going to lose KMSB Channel 11?
No. The KMSB, Channel 11 you’ve been watching will continue to broadcast its standard definition signal for some time to come.
19. I’ve got a question you didn’t answer?
No problem. As always you can submit your comment or problem to our Customer Care Center and we'll be sure to get back to you as soon as possible. Not only will we try to answer your question, but we’ll add the information to our FAQ’s on the website.

9. I am an AOL user, and I want to know why there are all these extra spaces in your newsletter? When you go to the Web to read one of our HTML-formatted newsletters and click to open the message, AOL puts that message through a filter to insert HTML line breaks at the end of the every line of code in the message. Unfortunately, we cannot prevent this from happening unless you upgrade to the latest AOL version 6.0, which is completely HTML compatible. This upgrade is free from AOL, and only takes a few minutes to complete. To upgrade to version 6.0, go to http://www.aol.com and enter the keyword "Upgrade."
