Lee Ann Ayers, SCC Animal Control Adv. Commission, says the SCC Animal Care & Control Center is overcrowded due in part to the increasing number of people bringing in pets they can no longer afford to keep. She says by making sure that a pet can't have puppies or kittens, you'll have peace of mind that his or her offspring won't be euthanized in an animal shelter. She says financial assistance has been available to help cover costs of spay and neuter through the Center.

Brigitt Baez, Nogales Community Development, says with so many families in Nogales and SCC facing foreclosure, the NCD has been trying to help people stay in their homes. Under NCD’s Housing Counseling Program, she says, people can apply for assistance. She says NCD draws up a financial plan, then contacts mortgage holders who generally will re-write the loan at a lower interest rate, thus reducing the amount of monthly mortgage payments.

Yvonne DelGadillo, Nogales Community Development, says the Assets for Independence Program provides for Individual Development Accounts (IDAs). She says IDAs are special savings accounts whereby participants can realize a 2 to 1 match on their savings. For every one dollar that a person saves, DelGadillo says NCD will match it with two dollars up to a total of $4,000. She says the savings must be applied towards purchasing a home, starting a business or for post-secondary education.

Yvonne DelGadillo, Nogales Community Development, says through a grant funded HUD, NCD developed land on Morley Avenue in the Nogales business district. She says in the heart of the Nogales business district, the “Little Mercado” offers small enterprises a centrally located place to operate their business and features additional parking for the downtown area. She says business plan development and financial management training is available to any business interested in participating.
