Adeline Cripe, Reading Is Fundamental, says RIF is the nation’s largest children’s literacy program. She says the mission of RIF is to ensure that every child believes in the value of books and the importance of reading. She says three times a year, kids in most SCC third grades are given a free book of their choosing. Volunteers also read to selected classes in selected schools each week. Cripe says it has been shown that kids who become interested in reading at an early age are better readers and more interested in reading, later in life.

Betsy McGee, Patagonia Walking Trail advocate, says Patagonia is a great spot to see beautiful green valleys and wonderful wildlife areas. She says there is a lot of history about the town, and a walking trail around the town would provide an opportunity for visitors to learn something about it. McGee says she is seeking grant funds to help cover costs, and hopes to have part of it “open” by the end of the year.

John Maynard, SCC Supervisor, District 3, says his District is one of the most diverse in Santa Cruz County, since it includes part of Rio Rico along with Tubac, Patagonia, Sonoita and Elgin. He says the issues facing Tubac are vastly different than those in Elgin or Sonoita, for example. Tubac is more concerned about growth while Sonoita is more involved with border-related issues, according to Maynard. In fact, he says, it’s the proximity to the border that creates similar issues for all three Supervisor Districts in SCC.
