PHOENIX -- Police say a kidnapping victim is safe after escaping through a window while his captors prepared to bury him alive.

On Tuesday, Phoenix police detectives learned that a 32-year-old man was abducted more than a week ago, but it was not reported to the police.

According to Officer Luis Samudio, numerous ransom demands for the family to provide $100,000 were unfulfilled.

Samudio said the victim was taken to a home near 78th Avenue and Osborn Road. While being held, the victim overheard the suspects say they were no longer waiting for the ransom and planned to bury the victim alive in a makeshift grave.

While the suspects used a cement cutting machine and prepared the gravesite in one of the bedrooms, the victim managed to free himself and flee out a bedroom window.

The victim contacted nearby neighbors and called police.

Officers set up surveillance of the home and saw two men run out. They were taken into custody.

Detectives discovered that the suspects had sawed a 3-foot-by-5-foot rectangle through the concrete foundation of a bedroom and had dug out a pit 5 feet to 6 feet deep.

Samudio said the victim did not receive any injuries and was not fed while held hostage. Detectives learned the victim is possibly involved in other illegal activities that are currently being investigated.

Doroteo Estrada-Perez, 38, was booked for kidnapping, aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit murder. Mariano Perez-Gonzalez, 27, was booked for kidnapping, theft by extortion, misconduct involving weapons and conspiracy to commit murder.
