Ariz. AG says districts can hold 2nd override vote

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona school districts whose voters last month rejected budget override proposals can legally hold another override election in March.

That's the conclusion reached by state Attorney General Terry Goddard in a formal legal opinion released Wednesday.

Goddard's opinion agrees with ones provided by lawyers for the Arlington, Union and Glendale elementary school districts and the Phoenix Union, Flagstaff, Nogales and Apache Junction unified school districts.

Arizona law generally bars districts from holding more than one override vote in a fiscal year. But Goddard says a 2009 law opens the door for districts to hold override elections in March 2010 whether or not they already had one in the same fiscal year.
