GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Glendale fire crews are investigating an early morning garage fire at the home of a jailed Iraqi immigrant accused of running down his daughter in what authorities call an 'honor killing.'

Glendale Fire Department spokesman Daniel Valenzuela said firefighters kept the fire from spreading to other parts of the home near 75th and Glendale Avenues.

A person inside the home heard a smoke alarm, went to investigate, and notified the fire department.

At least nine people were inside the home when the fire started shortly before 4 a.m.

No injuries are reported and everyone made it out safely.

Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started and the extent of damage.

PHOENIX (AP) — In about a week, workers at Fry's and Safeway in Arizona could be walking a picket line instead of stocking shelves and bagging groceries.

Both chains are in negotiations with the union that covers 20,000 workers.

United Food & Commercial Local 99 President Jim McLaughlin said in a note to the rank-and-file that a strike against one or more of the companies now appears likely.

The main stumbling block in getting a deal done is over health care. The companies have traditionally paid for their employees' health insurance and now want them to shoulder more of the cost.

Fry's Food Stores spokeswoman JoEllen Lynn said the company believes it has made a fair offer and is disappointed the union is now organizing for a strike.

The union represents most hourly workers at the two chains, including checkers, stockers, meat cutters, produce workers and others.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A Pima County Superior Court judge is keeping alive a lawsuit that is one of the first court cases involving a state constitutional requirement for compensation for property value reduced by land-use regulations.

Builder Michael Goodman sued for damages over a Tucson building code provision imposing a review process for demolition permits to tear down buildings.

Judge Paul Tang on Tuesday denied the city's request for a pretrial ruling in its favor on grounds that the city's repeal of the section meant Goodman's suit shouldn't go forward.

Tang ruled that it would be absurd to deny damage claims just because the section was repealed.

A lawyer for Tucson said Thursday the city will continue to defend against Goodman's suit, with the case moving ahead to pretrial fact-finding and other proceedings.

PHOENIX (AP) — A Scottsdale man charged in an identity theft operation has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 29-year-old Tark Tadros was the leader of a criminal syndicate that used high-tech devices to scan the credit cards of victims — often in stores and restaurants — and then manufactured new cards with the stolen information.

Tadros and three other men were accused of spending more than $1 million using the bogus credit cards, racking up large bills at casinos, stores and restaurants.

Mesa police say the ID theft ring had been operating since 2006 before the four men were arrested last February.

A search warrant at one of the defendant's home in Mesa resulted in the police seizure of computers, fake credit cards and credit card manufacturing materials.

Prosecutors say all four suspects pleaded guilty in the case and the last defendant was sentenced Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal law enforcement officials say the suspected Fort Hood, Texas, shooter had come to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.

The officials say the postings appeared to have been made by Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who was killed during the shooting incident that left least 11 others dead and 31 wounded. The officials say they are still trying to confirm that he was the author. They say an official investigation was not opened.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades.

YUMA -- A 22-year-old man accused of posing as a student at two Yuma high schools told authorities that he wanted to play basketball and hoped to get a college scholarship.

Yuma police on Wednesday arrested Anthony M. Avalos for fraudulently attending Kofa High School and Vista Alternative School intermittently since September 2008. He was a center on Kofa's basketball team.

Police say Avalos is facing charges of forgery and sexual conduct with a minor and is jailed on more than $110,000 bond.

Court records show Avalos graduated from Crestview (Fla.) High School in 2005.

Authorities say he admitted to creating a fake birth certificate using a word processing program on his laptop computer and used it to enroll in the Yuma schools.

They say Avalos also admitted to having sex with a girl he knew was under age 18 on at least three different occasions.
