CHANDLER –A pilot is dead after a World War II-era plane crashed during landing at a Chandler airport.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the single-engine P-51D Mustang crashed into the side of a hangar at Chandler Stellar Airpark at about 1:30. The pilot who died has been identified as Nazy Hirani.
Nearby hangars were evacuated after one of them caught on fire. That fire was quickly put out.
It is still unknown what caused the plane to crash but FAA investigators are continuing with their investigation.
Witnesses say the plane was traveling too fast to land and then they heard large pops and an explosion.
