Biden: US policy seeks to promote Afghan stability

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden says the United States had no choice but to increase its presence in Afghanistan because it simply cannot afford a collapse of the Kabul government.

In an interview Tuesday on MSNBC, Biden acknowledged that much of the terrorist threat the United States faces originates in neighboring Pakistan, but said there would be "chaos" in South Asia if the Afghan government fell.

Biden also said President Barack Obama's decision to send 30,000 more troops is not about rebuilding the country so much as it is a strategy to stabilize it and give President Hamid Karzai a chance to bring about reforms and allow the government to succeed.
