PHOENIX (AP) — The state Treasurer's Office says a monthly payment is going out early to charter school operators after a mix-up on when a change in timing would take place.
The Department of Education had told operators that a change in state law meant that the Nov. 15 payment would be advanced to Nov. 1. But the Treasurer's Office said Monday it wasn't consulted and that the change in law doesn't take effect until Nov. 21.
Treasurer's spokeswoman Kimberly Yee initially said that was too late to affect the November payment, but Yee later said the payment is going out on Monday after all because lawyers said they could defend it as reasonable under the circumstances.
The state changed the payment dates for school funding payments to sync them up with sales tax receipts.
