PHOENIX (AP) — Plans for a mid-November special session of the Arizona Legislature are firming up, with one senior House Republican saying GOP leaders and Gov. Jan Brewer are trying to close about a quarter of the state's big midyear budget shortfall.
According to House Majority Leader John McComish, details are still being worked out as leaders poll rank-and-file members.
But he said Wednesday that lawmakers aim to restore spending cuts and budget provisions vetoed Sept. 4 by Brewer.
Brewer says she intends to call lawmakers for a special session to make "significant progress" in closing the shortfall estimated at up to $2 billion.
McComish says the package under development approaches $500 million, including $300 million of spending cuts.
