GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — Officials at Grand Canyon National Park want to make it one of at least 50 national parks in the country that is attempting to respond to global climate change.

The Grand Canyon is considering how to recycle more, use less energy and water and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The park's climate change coordinator, Kathryn Parker, says it is also likely become a hub for teaching the public about climate change.

Grand Canyon National Park releases an amount of greenhouse gas equivalent to what 10,200 cars can produce in a year.

It uses a large amount of electricity because it must pump drinking water from the northern wall of the Grand Canyon down to the bottom of the canyon and up to the South Rim and Grand Canyon Village.
