ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say Albuquerque police shot two men following a confrontation at a northeast apartment complex.

Officers were responding to a disturbance around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night when they were confronted by two men — one holding a sledgehammer and the other a knife.

Police say the officers say they shot and wounded both men. One man required surgery and was in critical condition, while the other was listed as stable.

Police say they are still trying to piece together what happened.

The department is launching an internal investigation into the incident and both officers are on standard administrative leave for three days.
