MESA, Ariz. (AP) — A Gilbert man will receive a $50,000 settlement from Chandler after being injured in a 2007 car accident involving an on-duty city police officer.

Todd Sparks filed a lawsuit in Maricopa County Superior Court against Chandler last year. The suit claimed Chandler police officer John Bret Lucas' vehicle plowed into Sparks' car as Sparks attempted to make a right turn into a parking lot near the city government complex and police headquarters in September 2007.

Sparks claimed Lucas was traveling at a high rate of speed and that the accident caused him severe injuries in addition to the damage to his car.

A February 2008 letter to city officials from Sparks' lawyer proposed a settlement agreement of more than $154,000. The Chandler City Council voted unanimously earlier this month to approve a $50,00 settlement.
