MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Phoenix-based Turf Paradise is asking Mesa officials to permit off-track betting on its horse races.
Mesa's land-use regulations don't address off-track betting, leaving it open to interpretation as to whether planners can allow or block that kind of business from opening.
Planners turned to the City Council for direction Thursday. Mayor Scott Smith acknowledged that the businesses would bring in more tax money, but wonders whether wagering brings other problems.
Planners will start researching off-track wagering in other cities and report back to the City Council. Several sports bars in Tempe, Chandler, Scottsdale and Phoenix currently offer off-track wagering.
