TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A television ad launched by conservatives portrays U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords as a puppet controlled by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The ad, paid for by the Conservatives for Congress Committee, shows the Arizona Democrat as a marionette on stage dressed in jeans, cowboy boots and a large silver belt buckle with Pelosi above pulling the strings.
An announcer says Giffords votes virtually 100 percent of the time the way Pelosi tells her to.
In an interview with The Associated Press Friday, Giffords' campaign spokeswoman Anne Hilby said the commercial was a thinly veiled campaign ad for Republican congressional candidate and former payday lending lobby spokesman Jonathan Paton.
Hilby said the ad was launched Thursday in an attempt to distract from Paton attending a fundraiser in Phoenix for the payday lending lobby.
