Family steps up search for Kay Read
06:04 PM MST on Monday, February 25, 2008
62-year-old Kay Frances Read disappeared more than a week ago. She suffers from polio and her family fears she's in trouble because the crutches and braces she needs to get around were found inside her house.
Now, her family has stepped up the search to find her.
A small gathering of people at Fry's grocery store make up ground zero for Kay Read's search party.
Some are family members, such as Kay's brother Wes.
“We don't know what they've done with her,” Wes said. “We're hoping and praying all over the country, hoping and praying that we can find her .”
He came here from Illinois to search for her.
“As a Christian, we learned a long time ago that there's always hope, Wes said.”
Joining him is a constant stream of supporters, driving up to grab a handful of filers showing the person of interest in the case.
Grainy surveillance pictures show someone getting gas for Read's van at the Conoco on Golf links and Kolb.
Police say the man also tried unsuccessfully to use her ATM card, then later burned her vehicle with the wheelchair still inside.
But even with these grainy pictures lies hope.
“Hoping to get some interest out there,” said volunteer Scott Maher. “Some people that may have seen an individual person of interest that they can make some calls to 911 or 88 crime and tell us where Kay is at.”
Today he passes out fliers door to door. It's the least he can do to help.
More than a mile away, Read's house sits empty, with flowers and a missing person sign taped to the door. It’s a reminder of the woman family members hope to see again.
“We want our Kay back,” Wes Read said. “We could care less about this man (the person of interest). We want Kay back.”
Police have spent the past week searching the surrounding area and nearby desert areas along with volunteers and K-9s, but to no avail.
Now family members have set up a website showing pictures of Read and the person of interest in the case.
