07:27 PM MST on Wednesday, May 14, 2008
At a special ceremony on Tuesday, May 13, six local high school seniors were presented with scholarships by the Tucson Chamber of Commerce and the Tucson Center for Cultural Enrichment. The students plan to attend either Pima Community College or the University of Arizona in the fall.
Jose Estrada of Tucson High and Heather Henderson of Marana High School both received $3,000 scholarships that were provided by the Bank of the West and Desert Diamond Casino. Winners of $2,008 scholarships were Amelia Gabusi of Sahuaro High School, Cynthia Lee of Desert View High, Jesusita Solis of Tucson High and Jacqueline Stubbs of Desert View.
Three of the scholarships were awarded to students who plan to study in the high-tech or medical fields, while the other three went to those planning to study business, teaching or the arts. Applicants must have met minimum qualifications of a 2.5 grade-point average, have established positive citizenship in school and the community, and plan to live and work in the Tucson area after college.
