LAS VEGAS (AP) — Funeral services with departmental honors have been scheduled for two Las Vegas law enforcement officers who died last week. A Wednesday funeral is set for 30-year-old Officer Trevor Nettleton. He died in a shootout with several suspected gang members who allegedly tried to rob him at his North Las Vegas home. A funeral for Corrections Officer Daniel Leach is set Saturday. The 49-year-old Leach died in a traffic crash on duty Saturday on U.S. Highway 95 near Searchlight.

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — The fire chief says budget woes, retirements, aging equipment, delayed maintenance and fewer public education programs are contributing to a "recipe for disaster" in fast-growing Sparks. An example: Chief Andy Flock says it's been three years since firefighters have had time to check fire hydrants in private business areas and apartment complexes. He's calling it a matter of public safety that city officials and residents need to know about.

LAS VEGAS (AP) (AP) — The New York-New York Hotel & Casino has its winning Vinny. The Las Vegas Strip property announced the winner of its Vinny vs. Vinny "spokesVinny" competition yesterday (Monday). Vinny Blue was declared "the ultimate go-to guy for all things New York-New York." His real name is Thomas Cassell, and he's originally from New York but now he lives in Las Vegas. Voters cast ballots at the hotel and online.

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Sparks is getting a little bit bigger. The City Council voted yesterday (Monday) to annex a 30-acre industrial area west of the USA Parkway interchange and east of the Patrick interchange along Interstate 80. The request to become part of the city came from the Tahoe Reno Commercial Center. Officials say a land-use plan hasn't been completed yet.
