CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) — The state engineer's office has closed the High Plains aquifer in the Curry-Portales underground water basin to applications for new appropriations of ground water. State Engineer John D'Antonio says the order was put in place to extend the life of the aquifer in the Curry-Portales underground water basin in eastern New Mexico.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Thousands of tree and shrub seedlings go on sale to the public in New Mexico on Monday. The seedlings are made available through the state's Conservation Seedling Program, which this year led to the planting of more than 159,000 trees.

FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) — Northern New Mexico's Jicarilla Ranger District has 23 wild mustangs available for adoption. The horses, currently at the Browning Ranch in Farmington, will be offered for adoption at $125 each starting Dec. 11 on a first-come, first-served basis.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Gov. Bill Richardson and first lady Barbara Richardson will light the official state Christmas tree at the state Capitol in Santa Fe tonight. The ceremony at the southwest corner of the Capitol at 5 p.m. also will feature the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus on a firetruck, Christmas carols and light refreshments.
