SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Crews are working to restore power to thousands of New Mexicans after a strong winter storm passed through the state leaving more than a foot of snow in some areas and making travel dangerous. The storm was blamed for two traffic deaths and damage to White Sands Missile Range's police station.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The New Mexico Oil Conservation Division says it will have to cut field inspections by two-thirds this year as the state grapples with a budget shortfall. Division director Mark Fesmire says he's down seven inspectors and looming budget cuts will make it impossible to fill those positions.

CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) — Carlsbad police officers shot and killed a man following a chase last night. The man who was killed was identified as 27-year-old Ryan Baker, who was wanted in Chaves County for reportedly opening fire on police officers. Two officers have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

HOBBS, N.M. (AP) — A 26-year-old Hobbs man has been sentenced to life in prison for the January shooting death of a construction worker during a drunken brawl at a dance hall. Prosecutors say Aubrey Savage shot 28-year-old Yurhonnd DeLoach five times. Witnesses testified that Savage shot DeLoach in the back while the victim was on the ground.
