CLOUDCROFT, N.M. (AP) — A storm that tore through southern New Mexico has left behind damaged homes and a power outage in the village of Cloudcroft. Mayor Dave Venable said the storm packed 60-mile-an-hour winds and destroyed about 20 homes. There are no reports of injuries. Officials said 1,100 people could be without power for up to a week. A state of emergency has been declared.

CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) — Two Carlsbad police officers are on administrative leave after a man wanted in Chaves County was shot to death by police. Investigators say 27-year-old Ryan Baker was wanted for reportedly opening fire on police officers. Carlsbad Police Capt. Kevin Florez says the shooting occurred about 9 p.m. Monday and followed a police pursuit. The officers were not identified.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Attorney General Gary King has asked state regulators to hold the line on rate increases sought by Qwest Communications. King claims Qwest's proposed rate increases hit those least able to afford them.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated Grant and Luna counties as primary natural disaster areas due to losses caused by drought and high winds that occurred since Jan. 1.
