NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — New Haven Police Chief James Lewis says he will be stepping down from the post when his contract expires at the end of January.
Lewis made the announcement Wednesday. He added that he would be willing to stay until the city finds his successor.
Mayor John DeStefano Jr. says a new police chief should be on the job within the next four months.
Lewis has been chief since July 2008, after being hired to fill out the remaining 18 months on former Chief Francisco Ortiz Jr.'s contract. Ortiz left to take a public safety job at Yale University.
Lewis had said that he planned to retire back to the Midwest after his 1½ years as chief. Before New Haven, Lewis led police departments in Wisconsin in Green Bay and Grand Chute, and in Pomona, Calif.
