As Mexican authorities detailed the charges against him, Edgar Valdez Villareal-- "La Barbie"-- smiled. The fair skinned, green eyed Texan earned the nickname La Barbie when he was a younger man.
Born in Laredo, the high school football player crossed the border and rose through the ranks of Mexico's drug world.
He led a ruthless band of hit-men for the Beltran Levya drug cartel and battled for smuggling routes leading to Texas.
Valdez talks about some of this in a videotaped interrogation by Mexican federal police. The just released video has been broadcast on national television in Mexico - where La Barbie's capture is front page news.
