Suzanne Bissett reports

A Phoenix police officer is lucky to be alive Monday morning after he became the target of a drive-by shooting.

Officer Glenn Orstead, a 10-year veteran of the force, said he tried to pull over a man near 21st Avenue and Osborn Road around 9:30 a.m.

According to police, the suspect, who was driving a 1990 silver Lincoln Continental with a red cross on the window, refused to pull over and Orstead pursued him.

It was in a neighborhood near 24th Avenue and Indian School where the driver, described as a light-skinned, heavy-set Hispanic or African-American man, fired at least five shots at the officer.

Neighbors said they witnessed the chase.

"Here comes a Lincoln just flying through … And not far behind him was a motorcycle officer, pursuing him," said Carl Nyman Sr.

Some of the bullets hit homes in the area. The officer was not injured.

"He's very lucky," said Phoenix police Officer Amy O'Connell.

The incident is still under investigation.

The suspect is still on the loose.
