Phoenix: Thomas seeks death penalty for serial killer suspects
09:17 AM MST on Wednesday, October 4, 2006
Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said Tuesday suspected serial shooters, Dale Hausner and Samuel Dieteman, have earned the death penalty for what he calls their Campaign of Terrorism.
"I have made this decision to seek the death penalty after a thorough review of aggravating factors to justify a capital sentence," Thomas said.
Investigators have charged the former roommates with two counts of first-degree murder, 14 counts of attempted first-degree murder and 16 counts of drive-by shooting.
The aggravating factors, Thomas said, are that Hausner and Dieteman committed more than one murder and that they committed other serious crimes. He said the crimes are especially heinous or cruel and the crimes were committed in a cold and calculated manner.
Thomas is also expressing his wishes for a swift trial.
Most death penalty cases take more than three years to prosecute which he says is twice what the rules allow.
"I think it's because the defendants want to drag their feet," he said. "They're not in any hurry to face the music and the courts don't enforce the deadlines."
