Napolitano proposing "3-in-1" driver's license
05:44 PM MST on Friday, August 24, 2007
PHOENIX -- Gov. Janet Napolitano is proposing that Arizona come up with a high-tech driver's license that can serve as a border-crossing document.
She says the "3-in-1" license also would provide Arizona employers with a secure document that could be used in validating a person's legal status.
A new state law that takes effect in January prohibits employers from knowingly hiring illegal immigrants.
Napolitano wants the state to partner with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to launch the new license. She says it would satisfy future requires of Real ID, a federal identification requirement that would essentially create a national ID card
The Arizona Legislature would have to sign off on the proposal.
