AZ cheerleader, wrestler among those killed in Utah bus crash

10:01 AM MST on Tuesday, January 8, 2008

By AMANDA LEE MYERS / Associated Press Writer

PHOENIX (AP) -- Marc Rasmussen was a wrestler. Erica Sheffey was a cheerleader. Both high school students were unexpectedly killed on their way home to Arizona from a ski trip after their bus ran off a wet road in southwestern Utah and rolled 41 feet down an embankment.

They were among 9 Arizonans who died in the bus crash. Among the others was Scottsdale Saguaro High School senior Joseph Debolske, 18, whose father, Kevin, remains hospitalized, the boy's aunt, Theresa Talbert, told The Arizona Republic.

Rasmussen, a senior at Deer Valley High School in Glendale, was on the trip with his teenage sister, his kindergarten-aged brother and his parents, said district spokeswoman Sandi Hicks.

She did not know whether Sheffey, a Deer Valley junior, was traveling with family. A call placed to Sheffey's Glendale home was not immediately returned Monday evening.

In addition to Rasmussen, 18, Sheffey, 16, and Debolske, the Utah Highway Patrol identified the dead as Jeffrey Rivera, 32, of Gilbert; James J. Baumer, 41, Phoenix; Reese Washington, 12 (no hometown listed); Pam Humphreys, 67, Tucson; Carolyn Bowden, in her 60s, Phoenix; and Jasmine Bowden, 16, of Glendale.

Hicks said grief counselors were at the school Monday and would be available all week.

"Because of the number of students involved, this will have a profound impact," Hicks said. "Our focus is getting these kids in the right place emotionally before continuing on with academic goals."

Jessika Owen, an 18-year-old student at Deer Valley, said her sister was friends with Sheffey and described her as a good student. "She got straight As," Owen said. "She succeeded in anything she did."

She said she was shocked when the school made an announcement about the crash Monday morning.

"Today was devastating, that's for sure," Owen said. "Everyone was in tears and the classes were really silent."

The bus rolled 41 feet down an embankment in far southeastern Utah, killing nine passengers who were returning home from a ski trip. About 20 others were injured.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Cameron Roden said the bus failed to negotiate a curve, went off the road and rolled over several times Sunday evening.

Tamri Valls, a sales representative at Corporate Transportation, a subsidiary of Norfolk, Neb.-based Arrow Stage Line, said it was her company's bus that crashed.

She said the trip of skiers left Phoenix on Thursday but did not have details about their group.

Rich Cralley, a 33-year-old Phoenix resident, said he and his wife were on the same ski trip as the crash victims, but went home in a different bus and didn't learn of the crash until Monday morning.

"We knew the road conditions were bad. We were all nervous heading into it," he said. "I'm totally shocked by what happened and I'm glad that we made it. You feel sorry for those who didn't."
