The construction of a $3.7 million facility is planned to offer diabetes education and support to Pascua Yaqui tribal members.
The proposed Wellness Center aims to reduce diabetes by promoting exercise and a healthy lifestyle in the reservation.
The Wellness Center will include a conference room, child care services and kitchen space so visitors can learn hot to prepare healthy meals hands on.
The new facility will be funded by $2.2 million Housing and Urban Development grant money and $1.5 million from the Pascua Yaqui Tribe.
One tribal spokesman said too many families on and off the reservation have been negatively affected by this disease. Tribal members also said they believe the Wellness Center will be able to offer resources to facilitate healthy choices and promote physical activity.
The center will offer courses such as bike repair clinics and swimming lessons.
Statistics reveal that over 16% of tribal members are currently diabetic on the Pascua Yaqui reservation. Also, 61% of deaths within the tribe were due to heart disease brought on by diabetes.
Construction plans indicate the Wellness Center will include a swimming pool, basketball courts, volleyball courts and a large fitness center with a weight room, locker room and showers.
The facility is expected to be completed by January of next year.
