"Bike to Work Day" coming up as part of Clean Air Days

08:08 PM MST on Thursday, March 22, 2007

By Alicia BarrĂ³n, Fox 11 News

Those who have never tried it are invited to ride a bike to their workplace or school as a way to contribute to the upcoming Clean Air Days.

Tucson’s annual “Bike to Work Day” will officially launch a week dedicated to reducing the air pollution in the city.

According to a Department of Transportation news release, riding a bicycle every day to and from the workplace or school can save drivers between $3,000 to $5,000 a year.

Event organizers say they believe Tucson is a great city to bike in. Tucson is regionally-rated as a “Gold” community by the League of American Bicyclists, and has over 475 miles of striped bike lanes throughout the city.

This year’s “Bike to Work Day” kick-off event will take place Friday, March 30 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. in front of the mail library downtown.

Lots of bicycling information is expected to be available on that day such as bike safety tips, bike registration and bike repair stations as a way to encourage community members to ride their bicycles more often.

Participants are also invited to present their bike helmets to receive a free continental breakfast.

For more information please contact the Tucson Department of Transportation at (520) 837-6691, or to register for the event and enter a contest to win a bicycle from Fair Wheel Bikes, click here.
