$3 million worth of stolen wedding dresses found
09:41 PM MST on Monday, April 9, 2007
There is word tonight that border protection agents have found a trailer that has been missing for five months carrying $3 million worth of wedding gowns.
The thousands of stolen dresses reportedly belonged to a charity. They were en route to Los Angeles to be sold, with the money going to benefit breast cancer survivors.
Last November, the truck was stolen while parked in a Scottsdale lot and had been lost since then.
Last week, a customs and border protection agent in Nogales saw the dresses onboard a north-bound truck and said he made the connection.
Fox 11 News learned that after the dresses were initially stolen, hundreds of people proceeded to donate dresses to replace them.
Workers from the charity Making Memories say they happily accepted the donations at the time and did the best they could to raise funds.
One Arizona bridal shop donated about 500 dresses to the charity organization after the owners learned what had happened.
The driver of the trailer seized in Nogales has been taken into custody.
Scottsdale Police officials say they are now trying to determine whether the driver had anything to do with the theft.
A news conference is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon in relation to this case.
