He represented Tucson in Congress for 30 years and died nine years ago.
The Main Tucson Post Office has been re-named in honor of Morris K. Udall.
Udall’s roots ran deep in Arizona. His grandfather led settlers here and served in the territorial legislature.
While the post office honor is proper, the question now is has Tucson done enough to honor the man who did so much for the town?
He has got a park named after him, a mold of his face inside the Saguaro National Park’s visitor center and family ties at the University of Arizona. Now Tucson’s Main Post Office bears the name Morris Udall.
Rob Soler, from the U.S. Post Office, informs, “This post office is really the hub of postal services for all of Southern Arizona, which is why they selected it.”
It takes more than just a request to change the name of a post office.
Grijalva’s Chief of Staff Gloria Montano, says, “It goes through the same process as a bill to become law.”

“When you look at one of the committees that he chaired, it was the postal reform and there’s nothing named for him. That was the idea the congressman wanted to do to honor his work,” Montano said.
“Mo” Udall represented Tucson in Congress for three decades. Christopher Helms was with him through many of his campaigns. He was hired onto his staff and is now the executive director of the federally-funded Morris K. Udall Foundation.
“He was one of the most politick legislators during his 30 years in Congress and recognized as such by his colleagues for a number of years, always voted the most liked and respected member of Congress,” Helms revealed.
Udall died in 1998 from Parkinson’s disease, but he left a legacy many people want to hold on to. Helms says he thinks it might keep growing and growing. “Who knows, I’d like to maybe have the town, the name of the town changed to Mo Udall, Arizona.”
Udall’s legacy continues. He has both a son and a nephew currently in the U.S. House of Representatives and a great nephew in the Senate.
The re-naming of Tucson’s Main Post Office marks the first post office in Arizona that has been dedicated to someone.
