Baby's life saved with 800th heart transplant at UMC

A landmark heart transplant has been executed to save a baby’s life at a local medical hospital.
Surgeons at the University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center completed the 800th heart transplant as part of the University Medical Center’s Cardiothoracic Transplant Program.
Six-month-old Edna Acedo, who weighs only 12 pounds, received a new heart during a procedure that lasted about five hours.
According to a media release, the baby girl was stricken with valvular heart disease following her birth, which then developed into Cardiomyopathy. This condition prevents the heart from pumping an adequate amount of blood through the body.
Edna was placed on a heart-lung machine known as ECMO after she went into cardiogenic shock in April. ECMO can only sustain a patient for a limited amount of time so an emergency request was filed to receive a ventricular-assist device that assisted the baby’s heart in pumping blood through her body to sustain her organs for 75 days until a donor heart became available.
The surgical team was led by Dr. Raj K. Bose and assisted by Dr. Pei H. Tsau, who say Edna has made good progress toward recovery following her transplant procedure.
