Operation Splash crews aim to keep area washes clear

The monsoon has brought rain and lightning to Tucson, but it has also forced some dangerous debris on to city streets and into drainage.

City workers say you can help them find out where the problems are.

There is more than 1,100 miles of washes in and around the Tucson area. If they get plugged up, they can cause some serious flooding.

It builds in just about every wash and it’s the clean-up crews’ job to clean it out.

David Anderson, from the City of Tucson, reveals, “We get anything from tires, washing machines. There looks like a dishwasher over here.”

Like a clogged drain, these “wash plumbers” are working against Mother Nature to reopen the waterways.

“It would eventually flow over the bridge or back-up, up stream,” Anderson explains.

Nevertheless, instead of Drano, the city uses tractors.

Robinson admits they just, “Have them straighten it back out the way that it was.”

These workers are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. After the last couple of days, they say only the chainsaw gets a chance to rest.

“We’re putting in overtime,” Robinson reveals with a laugh.

The clean up is part of “Operation Splash,” an emergency response campaign during monsoon months to prevent flooding.

Steve Pageau, from the Tucson Department of Transportation, explains, “As people would put something into the wash that doesn’t belong there and it creates an obstacle to mess up the flow of the water then it creates a flooding hazard for the adjacent properties.”

Anderson says his crew should have a portion of the Alamo wash cleaned up in about two hours. Then on to another one, unless his phone does not ring.

“We haven’t received that call yet, but I’m sure it’ll happen with the weather that’s going on, it’s bound to happen.”

This service is free to the public. If you happen to see any debris in any wash, you are urged to call the city’s hotline.
