Annual meteor shower expected in mid-month
07:53 PM MST on Monday, August 6, 2007
You can expect to see one of the most visible meteor showers in mid-August.
The Perseid meteor shower takes place once every year. According to a news release, this year it is expected to have the highest number of shooting stars on the nights of August 11 through August 14.
Stargazers will get the opportunity to see as many as 50 meteors, or shooting stars, per hour.
It is recommended that observers view the meteor shower in dark skies away from city lights.
A news release indicates good locations for viewing include the east end of Speedway Boulevard at Saguaro National Park East and the Tucson mountains west of the city.
The University of Arizona’s Flandrau Science Center plans to offer a special presentation of the Perseids and on meteor showers in general. It will take place on Saturday, August 11 after the regular 8 p.m. planetarium show “More than Meets the Eye.” The cost is $5 per person.
For further information on the meteor shower, you can visit the Science Center’s Skywatcher’s Guide website by clicking here.
The next major meteor shower, known as Geminid, is expected in December.
