Dry periods after storm leads to increase in mosquitos

07:56 PM MST on Tuesday, August 14, 2007

By Alicia BarrĂ³n, Fox 11 News

Residents in Pima County are urged to take precautions during the dry periods following monsoon storms due to mosquitos.

A news release indicates these dry periods likely lead to an increase in floodwater-type mosquitos, also referred to as “ankle” or “daytime” biters.

Community members are advised to use insect repellents and wear longer-sleeve shirts and pants during evening and early morning walks. Limiting outdoor activity from sunset to sunrise is also advised to prevent mosquito bites.

“This particular mosquito is common to our area and monsoon rains provide the perfect launching point,” Community Relations Manager for the Pima County Health Department Patti Woodcock said. “The good thing about these mosquitos is that they have not shown to be good transmitters of West Nile Virus.”

Tucson area residents should also make sure there is no standing water in or around their homes, as well as repair any window or door screens that may be broken.

According to the news release, city and county officials hold regular meetings to share information on initiatives and education as part of an overall effort to control mosquitos and help prevent West Nile Virus.

For mosquito complaints, control tips or to report standing water or dead birds, you are asked to call (520) 243-7999.
