A Border Patrol agent in charge of the Nogales station followed through on a promise he made to his staff after challenging them to support a blood drive.

A news release indicates a Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol in Charge revealed to agents in Nogales that he was willing to shave his head if they beat the current record of 53 blood donors. The record was held by the Casa Grande Border Patrol station.

The blood drive was held on August 30. According to the news release, the Red Cross ran out of necessary supplies after 46 agents successfully donated blood. The Nogales Border agent in charge agreed to go through with the deal as if the goal was met because there were over 54 individuals willing to donate.

The news release provides the following facts about why blood supply is so important to the American Red Cross:

-More than 38,000 blood donations are needed everyday in the United States.

-One out of every 10 people admitted to a hospital needs blood.

-A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 units of blood.
