New developments in UA murder, suspect's family speaks out

Deanna Morgan's report

There have been new developments tonight in the case of the University of Arizona student stabbed to death by her roommate yesterday.

Court records show the accused planned the attack and tried to cover it up.

The results of an autopsy this afternoon confirm that Mia Henderson, the victim, died as a result of multiple stab wounds.

Henderson’s roommate, Galareka Harrison, is in jail tonight under $50,000 bail. Friends and family of both girls say they cannot believe this has happened.

By this afternoon most at the UA knew about what had happened.

“We’re just all really confused, I guess,” one student admits.

Residents of Greenlee Hall must cope with the unusual reality that one roommate is in jail and the other is dead.

Elvis Thomspon, another student, reveals, “Knowing that I was so close to her hall over here…” He says he wishes he could have prevented it. Perhaps there was not much anyone could do.

Galareka Harrison, 18, a freshman at the UA, is accused of killing her roommate, Mia Henderson, but her family does not believe it.

“We weren’t really sure if the news was right,” the suspect sister, Gavare Harrison admits. “We didn’t know what to think. We didn’t know what to do. She’s not that kind of person that could attack anyone.”

Nevertheless, court documents reveal Harrison purchased a knife while returning to campus. She was upset that her roommate had accused her of forgery and theft.

Harrison wrote a note pretending to be the victim explaining the forgery incident was false, then went back to her room where Henderson was asleep in her own bed and allegedly stabbed her numerous times.

Karen Garcia, from Tuba City Highs School, says this tragedy has been, “Like a shockwave going through the community.”

Friends and family held a candlelight vigil in Tuba City last night to remember Henderson, a role model and athlete who they say loved to smile.
“She had this sly sense of humor you wouldn’t really expect,” Rayelynne McCabe, also from Tuba City High School, reveals.

On Henderson’s Myspace page, friends express their sorrow and hope.

Garcia says, “There’s maybe something that will come out of this that will be very positive for everybody.”

Court documents also reveal what police say is the motive for the murder.

They claim Harrison was upset over Henderson filing a complaint last week with the UA Police saying Harrison stole her property.

Harrison pleaded not guilty to the first-degree murder charge and is in jail on $50,000 bond.
