Owners urged to vaccinate pets to avoid deadly virus
07:59 PM MST on Tuesday, September 11, 2007
Dog owners are encouraged to regularly vaccinate their pets in order to avoid a potentially deadly virus that local veterinarians say has become more prevalent.
A news release from the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) indicates parvovirus (Parvo) becomes more prevalent from July through September each year.
Many Tucson vet practices and pet hospitals are reporting a spike in Parvo cases.
This disease is the most common viral illness found in dogs, although it affects puppies more often than adult pets.
Parvo is a disease specific to dogs that attacks their intestinal lining. Symptoms include high fever, lethargy and loss of appetite. There is no cure for Parvo, only supportive treatment.
According to the news release, the best prevention is a series of vaccinations every three to four weeks beginning at 6 weeks of age until your pet is between 16 and 20 weeks of age.
HSSA offers low-cost vaccinations at their clinic at the Companions for Life Center located at 3465 E. Kleindale Road. The clinic is open on Saturdays from 6 a.m. until 7:30 a.m. and Mondays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
