Olympic medalist to attend 'Run Down Crime' walk
08:18 PM MST on Thursday, September 27, 2007
An Olympic gold medalist originally from Tucson is expected to attend a walk to benefit the police department.
Kerri Strug, a gymnast who won the gold medal in the 1996 Olympic Games, will attend the 3rd annual Tucson Police Foundation’s Run Down Crime 5K on Saturday, September 29.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Tucson Police Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises funds to support community activities held by the Tucson Police Department.
A news release indicates this race is the only U.S. Track and Field-sanctioned cross country event in Southern Arizona. Over 1,000 people are expected to participate.
The walk is different from many others in that it takes place entirely on grass. This year it will be held on the Dell Urich Golf Course.
Run Down Crime will begin at 8 a.m. with a 3.1-mile Cross Country run/walk, followed by a 1-mile Health Walk and a Mascot Chase for kids scheduled at 8:45 a.m.
