08:31 PM MST on Monday, November 5, 2007
A Tucson woman was cited and released after striking and killing a pedestrian in a midtown intersection.
Police responded to Speedway and Richey after receiving reports of a pedestrian that had been struck just before 10 p.m. on November 2.
Officers found Janet Cunningham, 53, who had been critically injured. She had been struck by 27-year-old Maria Arvizu who was driving a 2000 Ford Explorer.
According to a TEP news release, witness statements and evidence from the collision reveal Cunningham had been crossing Speedway from north to south on a marked crosswalk at Richey Boulevard. Arvizu was traveling on Speedway westbound in the center lane when she struck Cunningham.
Authorities say Arvizu did not display signs of alcohol or drug impairment. Excessive speed also appeared not be a factor in the accident.
Arvizu was cited and released for a Class 1 charge of misdemeanor of causing serious injury or death by a moving violation.
