Five people may face criminal charges after shots were fired at Border Patrol agents during an immigration stop on the evening of November 4.
The driver of a truck, suspected of being involved in illegal immigrant smuggling, sped away from agents as he was traveling on State Route 286 near milepost 7.
A news release from Border Patrol indicates agents heard loud pops and saw orange flashes coming from inside the truck as they followed the vehicle.
The agents called Pima County Sheriff’s Department and CPB Air & Marine aircraft to assist during the chase.
The driver attempted to evade authorities multiple times but eventually ran over controlled tire deflation devices that had been placed in the truck’s path.
According to the news release, four individuals besides the driver were apprehended for questioning. All suspects are Mexican nationals.
Agents say one of those apprehended verified shots had been fired at Border Patrol agents and at the CBP helicopter. All the occupants of the truck will be held pending removal proceedings and possible prosecution.
