Free walking program offered to seniors
08:23 PM MST on Monday, December 17, 2007
A walking program for seniors will be offered after the new year to facilitate healthier lifestyles through exercise.
AARP will host a free 10-week Walking Program at the Marana Senior Center to help participants get in shape. A news release indicates the program is part of a broader plan to help prevent illness through positive changes to personal behaviors.
Studies show that regular walking may reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, as well as arthritis and some types of cancer. AARP says programs such as this can also help reduce insurance costs and increase productivity.
“AARP has found a majority of our members who exercise prefer walking over any other type of physical activity,” Associate State Director of AARP in Arizona Elvera Anselmo said. “It’s easy to get started, all you need is a comfortable pair of shoes and a little motivation to get out there and walk.”
The 10-week program is also expected to help seniors designate safe places to walk. Various tools to help participants stick to their exercise plan will also be provided. Participants will also receive a free step counter and guidebook.
The Walking Program will kick-off on Monday, January 7 at 12:30 p.m. at 13250 N. Lon Adams Road in Marana.
