By Alicia BarrĂ³n, Fox 11 News

A new coordinator has been hired by the city to implement a solar initiative over the next two years.

Bruce Plenk will serve as solar energy coordinator for a grant-funded Tucson Solar Initiative expected to expand the city’s solar market.

A media release indicates Tucson is one of 13 recipients to receive a $200,000 grant from Solar American cities through the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Arizona Energy Office, TEP, the Tucson/Pima County Metropolitan Energy Commission and the Greater Tucson Coalition for Solar will partner with the city to provide both support and $353,000 in matching funds.

Funds from the grant, according to the media release, will also be used to transform local financial and informational barriers into more opportunities for solar installations.

Plenk, a licensed attorney, previously worked as a solar installer and teacher. He was also recently a member of the energy commission and worked with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords to develop a strategic energy plan for Tucson.
