Fire guts north side apartment
08:06 PM MST on Monday, March 17, 2008
There were some scary moments on St. Patrick’s Day as fire gutted an apartment at a large complex on Tucson’s north side near Stone and River. Witnesses say the woman who lived in the unit where the fire broke out at the Promontory Apartments banged on nearby doors looking for help. She escaped with minor burns to her leg, and aside from the one apartment, neighbors are thankful that the fire didn’t get too out of hand.
The blaze broke out in an apartment on the second floor, and nearby units were evacuated as a precaution. It took firefighters 22 minutes to get the fire under control. The fire department estimates that the building sustained about $150,000 in damage.
Nathaniel Demarco, who lives in the apartment below the one that caught on fire says he’s lucky. “It could have been a lot worse,” he says. “The ceiling could be falling down. It could have burned all the way through and everything could have been gone.” As it is, Demarco’s apartment is uninhabitable because of water damage. Both he and the woman whose apartment burned will be moved into vacant units at the complex.
Neighbors say the smoke detectors did go off, and firefighters say people should use this as a reminder to check the batteries in their smoke detectors, because that probably saved this woman’s life. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
