Attorney General warns of text message scam
07:31 PM MST on Wednesday, April 9, 2008
Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard is warning residents about a new “phishing” scam using text messaging. The scam involves receiving a text message saying that a bank account has been suspended, and asks the recipient to call a phone number to reactivate the account. When the number is called, a recorded message asks the caller to enter their bank account number.
The text messages have falsely claimed to be from various banks and credit agencies including Arizona Central Credit Union. Goddard says the text messages are fraudulent and are an attempt to steal personal and financial information.
Goddard says citizens should delete suspicious emails or text messages and hang up on anyone on the phone you don’t know who is looking for personal information. You should not give out information such as your Social Security number, bank account numbers or credit card numbers to any strangers, and report any suspicious calls to the Attorney General’s office at 602-542-5763.
