08:45 PM MST on Monday, May 12, 2008
A 33-year old Douglas woman has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle marijuana into the United States from Mexico. Monica Martinez is charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
Border Patrol agents say Martinez was accompanied by her sister and seven of their children when they attempted to cross the border at the Douglas Port of Entry on Sunday, May 11. Officers discovered about 21 pounds of marijuana hidden in a compartment under the center console of the car. Martinez admitted that she was to be paid $1,000 to smuggle the marijuana into the U.S.
If convicted on the charge, Martinez faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both.
