Mexican found guilty of cocaine smuggling

07:49 PM MST on Wednesday, May 14, 2008

By Jim Edwards, Fox 11 News

A 47-year old Mexican woman has been found guilty of importing cocaine into the United States. A federal jury in Tucson convicted Martha Suarez-Leon on charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and importation of cocaine.

Suarez-Leon was stopped at the Nogales Port of Entry on September 20, 2007, where U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers found 26 packages of cocaine hidden beneath and behind the back seat of her car.

The convictions both carry a minimum penalty of 10 years up to a maximum penalty of life in prison, a $4 million fine, or both. Suarez-Leon will be sentenced on August 7 by U.S. District Court Judge Cindy Jorgenson.
