07:12 PM MST on Thursday, May 15, 2008

By Jim Edwards, Fox 11 News

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers stopped a heroin smuggling attempt, seized a large amount of marijuana, and arrested a woman trying to use a fraudulent passport in three separate incidents on Wednesday, May 14.

The heroin, worth an estimated $700,000, was discovered at the Nogales port of entry in luggage that a 63-year old man was attempting to bring into the United States on foot. He was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for prosecution.

Earlier, officers at the same port of entry took a 52-year old woman from Jalisco, Mexico into custody when she tried to enter the U.S. on foot using a passport that was not hers. She was turned over to the Department of State Bureau of Diplomatic Security for prosecution.

The third incident took place at the Douglas port of entry when officers stopped a 26-year old man driving a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500. When the truck was searched, officers discovered 436 pounds of marijuana hidden in a speaker box in the back. The suspect, who is from Hermosillo, was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
