While the war on terror continues in Afghanistan, a Tucson company hopes to bring some joy to the war-torn country with a plane filled with toys and school supplies for kids. “It’ll be a wonderful present to them,” says Momin Khan of Pamir Airways.

It’s a present that comes as an unexpected surprise. The aircraft maintenance company Global Aircraft Solutions is generally in the business of refurbishing old planes to sell to commercial carriers worldwide. “We do about 30 aircraft a year, so basically two and a half a month,” says Global President John Sawyer. The plane that will take the toys and supplies to Kabul was bought by Pamir Airways of Afghanistan.

Usually the 737 planes go halfway around the world completely empty, but this time around the cargo holds are being put to good use. Global Vice President of Sales Alden Crowley says he’s seen the planes fly without cargo one too many times. “Why are we not using these resources?,” he asks. “We could’ve fit six, seven, eight tons of humanitarian goods - toys, clothes, anything to help these kids out.”

Crowley created the non-profit group “Another Joy Foundation,” and collected four tons of toys, ensuring that on this trip the plane will have a full load of plush passengers. “I just can’t wait to get over there and be passing out these toys, and see a big smile on their faces,” he says.

The extra weight is going to mean that more fuel will be used to fly the plane, but that is being taken care of by Pamir Airways. “We are willing to forget about that because it’s a noble cause,” says Khan.

The plane takes off on Thursday, June 12, and is expected to arrive two days later. The company plans more deliveries on their aircraft in the future, and they are looking for donations. You can get more information on how to help by clicking here.
