Better Business Bureau warns of vote scam
09:03 PM MST on Monday, August 4, 2008
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning registered voters in southern Arizona about a new identity theft scam. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), people have been receiving unsolicited phone calls and emails from someone claiming to represent their local election board or another civic group. The recipient is asked to provide their Social Security or credit card numbers to confirm their eligibility or registration to vote.
In Pima County, residents need only provide the last four digits of their Social Security number when filling out a voter registration form. The BBB says legitimate organizations conducting voter registration drives either contact you in person, or provide you with a form that you fill out yourself. They will not ask you for financial information.
If someone contacts you saying they need your Social Security number or other personal information to either verify or proceed with your voter registration, you should contact the FTC at 877-382-4357, or by clicking here.
