Man wanted for murder returned to Mexico

08:51 PM MST on Tuesday, August 5, 2008

By Jim Edwards, Fox 11 News

A 35-year old man wanted for the shooting death of a Mexican Police commander in 2006 has been returned to Mexico by U.S. Marshals to face murder charges. Jose Felix-Cervantes had fled to the United States after allegedly shooting his commander after the two got into an argument while on duty in June of 2006. A fellow officer was also wounded during the shooting, which took place in Hermosillo.

Mexican officials contacted the U.S. Marshals Office in Tucson and asked them to determine if Felix-Cervantes had indeed fled to the U.S. In 2007, Felix-Cervantes was found to be in custody at the Pima County Jail on drug and weapons charges. He was taken to the Nogales Port of Entry and turned over to the custody of the Mexico Federal Investigative Agency.

“This is another fine example of the continuing cooperation of U.S. and Mexican officials to bring foreign fugitives to justice,” said David Gonzales, U.S. Marshal for the District of Arizona. “We are pleased to be able to return this fugitive back to Mexico, so that he may answer charges there.”
